Position Description and Responsibilities

Under direct supervison of the Assistant Superintendent of Programs (Senior Public Service Administrator), assists in providing a varied and highly structured leisure time activities for all youth within the housing units and within various recreational facilities inside and outside of Illinois Youth Center (IYC) Pere Marquette; assists in coordination of outside recreation and community services activities; functions as part of a multi-disciplinary team to assist in developing and delivering an individual treatment program within the context of a larger group activity; participates on evaluation and staffing of youth; provides assistance in review of leisure time program needs.

35% Assists in providing individual and group recreation, within and outside of the facility, designed to match youth maturity, emotional needs, and abilities.

20% Provides direct supervision to youth participating in activities and youth workers.

10% Plans activities in conjunction with the facility schedule.

10% Secures and inventories all equipment and supplies.

10% Monitors special events and entertainment.

05% Participates in youth staffing meetings, evalutions, and assessments of youth treatment needs.

05% Reports unusual incidents.

05% Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Requires knowledge, skills and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, with a Bachelor's degree in leisure studies, recreation, physical education, art eduction, fine arts, studio arts, graphics, color and design, therapeutic recreation, music, theater, or speech and communications.
  2. Requires working knowlege of the methods, techniques and purposes of leisure activities.
  3. Requires elementary knowledge of leisure activities programs and skills development tailored to individual needs.
  4. Requires working knowledge of arts and crafts.
  5. Requires elementary knowledge of corrections regulations, policies, and proper channels of communication as applied to the leisure time programming,
  6. Requires the elementary knowledge of attitudes, problems and behavior of individuals and groups in a correctional security setting.
  7. Requires ability to prepare pertinent records and reports.
  8. Requires ability to stimulate interest of institution residents in leisure time activities.
  9. Requires ability to carry out leisusre activities, and teach leisure skills.
  10. Requires ability to work effectively with individuals and groups.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to pass the Illinois Department of Corrections/ Department of Juvenile Justice background check.

The mission of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) is to build youth skills and strengthen families by promoting community safety and positive youth outcomes. Over 900 staff members from across various departments security, programming, education, mental health, and more collaborate with the understanding that youth are physically, emotionally, and cognitively different from adults. The department provides extensive services to young people through a developmental, treatment-focused model of care that builds youth resiliency, engages families, and promotes community safety at the five youth facilities it operates across the state. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and is responsible for approximately 500 youth on Aftercare in various Illinois communities.
